Stephen Curry showed up for his press conference after practice on Sunday with his right shoulder wrapped, but he dismissed the idea that there was a serious problem.
“I can’t even keep a straight face, whoever said I was getting shoulder surgery and all that kind of stuff,” Curry said, smiling. “We got bumps and bruises but we’ll be all right. We’ll be fine.
Nobody is fully healthy deep into the playoffs, but it appears that Stephen Curry is especially not healthy. The Golden State Warriors superstar has looked a little less mobile since returning from his sprained MCL in May, and the Los Angeles Daily News’ Mark Heisler reported that he has a host of other problems:
If Steph Curry has only been Steph Curry intermittently, there’s a reason.
He’s hurting … even more than he acknowledged last week while withdrawing from the U.S. Olympic team.
It’s not just the ankle and the knee that he sprained, sidelining him for six games in the first two rounds.
A source says Curry consulted a orthopedist in Southern California. Steph’s MRI showed issues with both shoulders as well as his knees, some of which may require surgery this summer.
The MVP still scored 38 points in Friday’s Game 4 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA Finals. He still managed to play excellent defense against the Oklahoma City Thunder’s Russell Westbrook in the conference finals and he has even fared well when switched onto LeBron James. It is not like he is limping around out there. This is, however, something to keep in mind if you are wondering why Curry has not just taken over every game regardless of how his opponents have defended him.
When Curry has struggled, like in Game 3 of the Finals and Game 4 against the Thunder, he has not made excuses of any kind. If he is this banged-up, he surely won’t say anything about it until the season ends. Curry does not want sympathy, and judging by his public comments, he has not lowered his expectations for himself. If the Warriors do finish off the Cavaliers on Monday, though, this situation will just be one more obstacle that they overcame in a historic season. And Curry will have earned a great deal of rest.
