Accra Basketball League (ABL) Men’s Division I games have been postponed to a yet to be named date as heavy rains prevented Week Five games from taking place. The games, three in all, were scheduled to be honored on June 3 at Lebanon House in Tudu, Accra.
However, on the exact day massive floods caused a major fire outbreak which claimed the lives of over 150 people in Ghana’s capital, Accra a year ago, heavy rains drenched the entire city.
Though the rains ceased almost three hours prior to the scheduled 17:00 GMT tipoff time, league administrators deemed the court too risky to play on.
Navy Coach Alexander Tindani whose side was expected to play Fire Service in the second game was disappointed with the outcome but adamant, player safety ought to be prioritized. “The safety of the players is paramount” he said.
Officials had arranged for fans and players to observe a minute silence before the opening game between Air Force and Reformers of Prisons in remembrance of people who perished in the floods and fire disaster.
Per reports gathered by Basketballghana.com, league administrators are yet to decide on the date to honor the games. Home side Tudu Magic was in line to play DC Dynamics in the final game of the day.
