University of Ghana’s (UG) long walk to the 2016 Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges (UPAC) Basketball Championship title meant the team had to beat the best of the best in Ghana’s tertiary basketball ranks.
On the way to what would be an epic journey to the title, the team had already wrapped up competition in the University sect by beating University of Professional Studies 65-49. The win gave UG its’ first trophy in 2016 and ending the team’s depressing 2015 season which had the team exit the UPAC Championship at the group stage.
However, a change on the sideline made Meme Falconer-a former standout player for University of Education (Winneba) head coach and in the process ushered in a new brand of UG basketball built on incredible work rate and excellent ball movement.
However, the most important indicator of the tactical switch was in the box score. The team went undefeated in eight games including a standout 31-29 win over Marshalls University College in Zone G’s finale.
The double over Accra Polytechnic including the 45-44 win in the final game was another highlight moment in the competition.
