The 2016 Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges (UPAC) Basketball Championship ended on a great note as University of Ghana (UG) played out a scintillating game with Accra Polytechnic before a massive crowd at UG’s Center Courts.
The host beat the defending champions 45-44 to emerge winners of the third edition of the competition. Individuals and teams who made the tournament a huge success were rewarded for their standout performances during the tournament.
UG Forward Muhaimin Guba was adjudged the Most Valuable Player of the Tournament after playing an instrumental role in ending Accra Polytechnic’s dominance in the competition. He was rewarded a brand new mobile phone, with units worth 200 Cedis and assorted items from sponsors.
UG Coach Meme Falconer was named the Coach of the Tournament after guiding his team to an unbeaten championship run which had UG beat two-time champions Accra Polytechnic twice in the competition. He also took home assorted items from sponsors.
UG was rewarded with gold medals, a cash prize of 3000 Cedis, a glittering trophy and assorted items from sponsors. The team’s win capped off what has been a good year thus far after winning the Ghana Universities Sports Association (GUSA) Basketball competition.
Accra Polytechnic came in second after winning the ultimate in consecutive tournaments. The received 1500 Cedis, silver medals and assorted items from Sponsors.
Last year’s finalists Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) placed third this time around earning bronze medals, 1000 Cedis and items from sponsors.
The 2016 UPAC Championship is headlined by Rexona, supported by MTN, CAL Bank and Fanyogo in partnership with Bsketballghana.com, Y FM, TV 3 and Ghana Sports Newspaper.
