University of Ghana starting Point Guard Joshua Akai has expressed satisfaction with his team’s attitude during the team’s run to annexing the 2016 Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges (UPAC) Basketball Championship.
The host team beat defending champions Accra Polytechnic 45-44 in an enthralling final to win a second major trophy this year following the team’s win in the GUSA (Ghana Universities Sports Association) Basketball competition earlier this year.
In an exclusive interview with Basketballghana.com, the experienced Guard noted perseverance, strength and unity as the main catalyst of their success. He said:
“It was an amazing game, it had a lot of tension, excitement, we came in knowing it wasn’t going to be an easy game…but our perseverance, strength and unity paid off we won.”
UG capped off an incredible run in this year’s tournament by going unbeaten through the entire competition from preliminary qualifiers to the final game. The unbeaten run was highlighted by a 36-28 win over Accra Polytechnic in Group A’s quarter final game.
The team failed to progress out of the preliminary stage losing out to Marshalls University College in last year’s edition. UG received a prize package worth 300 Cedis and assorted items from organizations associated with the competition.
The tertiary champions will play in an international tournament later this year in South Africa.
