Takoradi Polytechnic’s winning mentality is primarily responsible for Takoradi Polytechnic’s surprise run in the 2016 Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges (UPAC) Basketball Championship according to Guard Daniel Benneh.
The Western Region-based side has secured a spot in the semi finals where the team will take on defending and two-time champions Accra Polytechnic in all Polytechnic affair on Saturday April 15. The team secured top spot in Group B in the quarter finals.
Benneh credited Coach Owusu Ansah Ankrah for instilling a winning mentality in the group which catapulted them into the semis after exiting at the quarter finals in last season’s competition. In an interview with Basketballghana.com, he said:
“From the onset our coach psyched us; told us we came here to win and that’s the winning mentality…we’ve proven to the world that is how it is.”
Takoradi Polytechnic topped Group B after beating Marshalls University College 59-57 and University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR); though the team lost to last year’s finalists Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
Having a similar record with those of Marshalls University College and KNUST, the team’s superior goal difference was what separated them from the other contending teams. Takoradi Polytechnic will look forward to cause another stir as they take on defending champions Accra Polytechnic.
The 2016 UPAC Championship is headlined by Rexona, supported by MTN, CAL Bank and Fanyogo in partnership with Basketballghana.com, Y FM, TV3 and Ghana Sports Newspaper.
