Defending Champions Accra Polytechnic will play Takoradi Polytechnic in a matter of hours in the much awaited semi final games in the 2016 Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges (UPAC) Basketball Championship at the University of Ghana.
Hosts University of Ghana (UG) will play against contemporaries Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in the other semi final game of the day as all four teams look to progress to next and final round in the competition.
Despite losing to hosts UG and having their epic winning run snapped in the process, Accra Polytechnic will be on the lookout for a third straight final game. The team beat KNUST 57-40 in a comeback win to cement its’ status as the most dominant team in tertiary basketball.
Takoradi Polytechnic moved into the final four on the back of an impressive run which saw them win Zone E in the preliminary qualifiers and beat highly rated Marshalls University College. The team punched its’ semi final ticket by walloping debutants University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) 91-31.
University of Ghana’s unbeaten run in2016 continues in ebullient fashion as the team recorded a famous 46-38 victory over Accra Polytechnic which ended the latter’s long winning streak. The team is enjoying a good run of form as they keep on piling on wins in dominant fashion.
KNUST’s title ratings are far lower this year than last year since the team has looked quite ordinary in this year’s competition. The lackluster play from the Kumasi-based side can be blamed on the absence of key players including Kwame Akrasi who missed the Championship due to a serious ankle injury he suffered in a friendly game.
The 2016 UPAC Championship is headlined by Rexona, supported by MTN, CAL Bank and Fanyogo in partnership with Basketballghana.com, Y FM, TV3 and Ghana Sports Newspaper.
