Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology beat Takoradi Polytechnic 48-45 to secure third place in the 2016 Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges (UPAC) Basketball Championship at the University of Ghana.
The Kumasi outfit’s win gives the team a third straight victory over Takoradi Polytechnic- who go by the moniker “The Oilers”- in as many UPAC Championship editions. The latest victory comes on the back of last year’s win as KNUST went all the way to the final game before losing to Accra Polytechnic.
The team’s winning run continued in this year’s edition as KNUST beat Takoradi Polytechnic 49-42 in the quarter final match up in Group B. Both teams qualified out of the Group ahead of Marshalls University College and University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR).
In the game KNUST maintained a healthy lead for much of the game as both teams played lethargically in the opening quarters. Playing in searing temperatures had taken a huge toll on both set of players before the game sprung into life in the latter stages.
Obed Voryee, Sammy and Nana Kwame Adjei came through for KNUST in a game where starman Ekow Amoako found it difficult finding his shot.
The 2016 UPAC Championship is headlined by Rexona, supported by MTN, CAL Bank and Fanyogo in partnership with Bsketballghana.com, Y FM, TV 3 and Ghana Sports Newspaper.
