Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) failed to make the finals of the 2016 Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges (UPAC) Basketball Championship after falling to University of Ghana 47-49 in the semis.
The team failed to replicate last year’s heroics where the Kumasi-based side made it all the way to the final game setting up a meeting with Accra Polytechnic. Accra Polytechnic won its second consecutive championship title after rallying from behind to record a 57-40 win over KNUST.
However, the team could only manage a third place game in this year’s edition. The team will take on Takoradi Polytechnic in that game with a bronze medal up for grabs in a repeat game of the quarter finals Group B.
KNUST looked a bit short on bench support as the team had several key players miss out on the Championship entirely due to injury. Talisman Kwasi Akrasi failed to compete after spraining his ankle in a friendly game prior to the games.
Both teams met in last year’s edition where KNUST beat “the Westerners” in the quarter finals. Having lost both games against KNUST, Takoradi Poly will be in the hunt for a win to end KNUST’s winning streak.
The 2016 UPAC Championship is headlined by Rexona, supported by MTN, CAL Bank and Fanyogo in partnership with Bsketballghana.com, Y FM, TV 3 and Ghana Sports Newspaper.
