University of Ghana beat Takoradi Polytechnic 46-38 in a thrilling final game of Day Two of the2016 Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges (UPAC) Basketball Championship at the former’s Central Basketball court.
The tense game lived up to every bit of pre game hype drummed all week after the quarter final draw was made. The game which had reigning GUSA(Ghana Universities Sports Association) Basketball Champions UG go against reigning GHAPSA (Ghana Polytechnic Sports Association) Basketball Champions Accra Polytechnic.
With both teams heading into the game with unbeaten streaks, Group B’s top spot and bragging rights were up for grabs in the mightily anticipated game final game which summed the last eight stage.
Physical play and highly charged emotions deprived the game of much quality for long stretches. It got so physical players sustained varied injuries.
In the midst of the tempestuous game, UG Forward Maxwell Mod provided acts of elite athleticism and elite showmanship by snapping Accra Poly’s scoring run with a dazzling array filled with dunks, strong post moves and dead eye shooting from the charity stripe.
Accra Polytechnic’s elite wing combination of Small Forward Farahat Aliu Tamimu and Shooting Guard Abdul Mutaleeb Alhassan failed to put their stamp on the game as they failed to knock down shots from deep.
Center Suleman Abubakar’s was the defending champions sole bright spot by consistently corralling rebounds and scoring majestically on jumpers just inside the paint.
Accra Poly’s game was in total disarray in the latter quarters which gave UG the chance to create some daylight between themselves and Accra Polytechnic and seal a vital win which ended a long run of UG losses to Accra Poly.
UG will play Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in the semi finals by topping Group B. Group A winners Takoradi Polytechnic will take on Accra Polytechnic in the other semi final.
