Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) is relishing the chance of winning the 2016 Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges (UPAC) Basketball Championship according to Forward McMartey Lawer.
GIMPA beat Pentecost University College 37-27 in an outstanding Zone A game to secure top spot in the zone and quarter finals.
The game was played during Zone G qualifiers at the University of Ghana where the host team beat Marshalls University College to qualify to the quarters as well. Marshalls will be in the quarters as the second best placed team in Zones A, F and G.
Speaking to Basketballghana.com after the impressive win, Lawer was pleased with the performance of his teammates and the team is focused on winning the title. He said, “Most of the guys on the team are in their final year…we really want this, we want to play the nationals (finals). Last year we were close but this year we are poised to make the nationals”.
The team trailed by 10 points to Pentecost in the early half of the game but a deep three pointer by big man Paul Eta sparked GIMPA into action as they wiped out the deficit to seal a famous win for the Legon-based institution.
GIMPA’s win was much needed as it ensured the team plays in the quarter finals following a 15-19 loss to Ho Polytechnic and a 30-24 win over Ghana Technology University College-Accra in the opening rounds of the Championship.
GIMPA has since been drawn in Group A alongside Accra Polytechnic, University of Ghana and University of Development Studies-Tamale for the quarter finals.
The 2016 UPAC Basketball Championship is headlined by Rexona, supported by MTN, CAL Bank and Fanyogo in partnership with media outlets Basketballghana.com, TV3, YFM and Ghana Sports Newspaper.
