University of Ghana had a sweet revenge victory over nemesis Marshalls University College in the just ended 2016 Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges (UPAC) Basketball Championship by winning 31-29 in Zone G.
The guaranteed UG a place in the quarter finals as the win over Marshalls meant the team ended preliminary qualifiers in the zone, undefeated following similar impressive wins over Central University College and Wisconsin University College.
UG topped the zone after beating Marshalls since the latter, beat Central and Wisconsin in similar fashion. By beating Marshalls, UG revenged a heartbreaking but famous 26-32 loss in front of their home crowd to then debutants Marshalls in last year’s edition.
The loss coupled with other unfavourable scenarios in the group resulted in UG missing out on a quarter final place in the competition last year. Marshalls spurred on by their giant killing instincts, wnet on to record an impressive fourth place finish behind University of Cape-Coast.
In the most dramatic game of the day that lived up to the massive hype, Marshalls could have salvaged something from the game as Shooting Guard Daniel Laryea had the chance to send the game into overtime had he converted a pair of free throws.
Marshalls will have another chance in the competition to rewrite the script as they scrapped into the quarter finals on the basis of being the second best placed team among Zones A, F and G respectively.
The reigning PUSAG (Private Universities Students Association Games) Basketball Champions amassed two wins with a better goal difference than fellow contenders Ho Polytechnic and Valley View University.
The 2016 UPAC Championship is headlined by Rexona, supported by Fanyogo, MTN and CAL Bank in partnership with Basketballghana.com, Y FM, TV3 and Ghana Sports Newspaper.
