Zenith University College have been eliminated from the 2016 Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges (UPAC) Basketball Championship after suffering two straight losses in Zone F qualifiers. The 2015 quarter finalists get to face Valley View University in the third round of preliminary games with no chance of making it out of the zone.
The elimination marks a sad turn in fortune for the once heralded Zenith team that had standout talents like Kingsley Quist and Joseph Boye. Zenith lost surprisingly to debutants Blue Crest College 18-19 and followed it up with a 33-44 loss to defending champions Accra Polytechnic in the next game.
Zenith also crashed out of the just ended Private Universities Students Association Games (PUSAG) Basketball Championship at the group stage as minnows Evangelical Presbyterian University College and Kings University College qualified ahead of Zenith. Zenith went into the competition as defending champions but their title defense came crashing down in the first round.
Debutants Valley View University College can qualify for the quarter finals with a win over Zenith but will need fellow debutants Blue Crest College to beat hosts Accra Polytechnic with a wide margin. Blue Crest College can also qualify for the last eight with a big win but will also be dependent on results in Zenith’s game.
The 2016 UPAC Championship is supported by MTN, CAL Bank and Fanyogo in partnership with Basketballghana.com, TV3, YFM and Ghana Sports Newspaper.
