Blue Crest College made a memorable debut in the 2016 Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges (UPAC) Basketball Championship by beating Zenith University College 19-18 in Zone F’s second game.
The third edition of UPAC, headlined by Rexona, has four institutions; Accra Polytechnic, Zenith University, Blue Crest College and Valley View University competing for a spot in the quarter finals of the competition.
In a game characterized by missed shots, bad turnovers and tons of scrappy play, both teams failed to excite an expectant crowd who had earlier been thrilled by hosts Accra Polytechnic’s thrilling game against Valley View University.
However, Blue Crest had just enough offensive firepower to claim a 13-8 lead heading into the second half. Zenith University still ruing from crashing out of the Private Universities Students Association Games (PUSAG) group stage, mounted a comeback in the second half.
Unfortunately, missed free throws plagued Zenith and prevented them from completing the comeback before the final whistle ended proceedings to give Blue Crest a winning start in the campaign.
Blue Crest and Valley View will square off in all-debutants game next before Zenith tries the arduous task of beating defending champions Accra Polytechnic in the second round of qualifiers to extend its stay in the competition shortly after.
The 2016 UPAC Championship is supported by MTN, CAL Bank and Fanyogo in partnership with Basketballghana.com, TV3, YFM and Ghana Sports Newspaper.
