Takoradi Polytechnic Guard Kent Fosu Agyeman has been named Most Valuable Player after Zone E qualifiers for the 2016 Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges (UPAC) Basketball Championship which concluded yesterday at the University of Cape-Coast.
After guiding Takoradi Polytechnic to qualify from the zone courtesy a 49-46 win over host University of Cape-Coast, Ofosu Appiah was awarded the best player in the mini tournament. His infectious ball handling skills and deft scoring touch made him hard to contain as he willed a well conditioned T Poly side to victory.
Kent’s award brings to four, the number of backcourt dwellers who have been named MVP in respective zone qualifiers. In Zones B, C and D Point Guards were awarded for their magnificent displays in the games.
In Zone B, Abdou Fatau emerged the best player in the tournament that featured Tamale Polytechnic and Wa Polytechnic. The energetic leader, trained by 1978 Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) Female Basketball Player of the Year, was the unanimous winner as he almost single handedly guided University of Development Studies to a quarter final berth in the championship.
In Zone C, University of Energy and Natural Resources and former Koforidua Secondary Technical school (K.S.T.S.) Guard Robert Fiifi Brew was adjudged the best player in the competition after averaging 6.4 points, four rebounds and two assists in three games played against Catholic University College of Ghana, Sunyani Polytechnic and Sunyani Nurses Training College.
In Zone D, Kumasi Polytechnic’s failure to win the zone’s sole ticket to the quarter finals did not dampen the chances of Point Guard Kelvin Sowah Kumah being named MVP when the qualifiers hit Ashanti Region’s capital, Kumasi.
Despite the splendid performances, Kumasi Polytechnic fell to Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in the deciding qualifying game.
With the exception of Kumah, all will be present in quarter final matchups scheduled for April 14 at the University of Ghana in Accra.
The 2016 UPAC Championship is supported by MTN, CAL Bank and Fanyogo in partnership with Basketballghana.com, TV3, Y FM and Ghana Sports Newspaper.
