University of Cape-Coast (UCC) and Cape-Coast Polytechnic will compete in the opening game of the 2016 Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges (UPAC) Basketball Championship’s Zone E today at the former’s plush basketball court.

The 2016 UPAC Championship is headlined by Rexona and will feature the aforementioned pair and Takoradi Polytechnic compete for the zone’s sole qualifying spot. University of Education-Winneba withdrew from the Championship in the final moments prior to the start of what is widely regarded as Ghana’s biggest basketball championship.

The Cape-Coast based institutions will begin proceedings in Zone E where the latest chapter of their intense rivalry will be played before an enthusiastic crowd. Following the failures of Tamale Polytechnic and Kumasi Polytechnic to secure quarter final slots despite having the advantage of home support, UCC will hope to avoid such fate.

Cape-Coast Polytechnic on the other hand will be on the lookout for a spot in the latter stage of the competition after failing to qualify to the last eight of the competition in two previous attempts. University of Development Studies, University of Energy and Natural Resources and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology have already secured passage into the quarter finals which will take place at the University of Ghana on April 14.

The 2016 UPAC Championship is supported by MTN, CAL Bank and Fanyogo in partnership with Basketballghana.com, TV3, YFM and Ghana Sports Newspaper.
