Wa Polytechnic has defeated Tamale Polytechnic 24-20 in the opening game of Zone B of the Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges (UPAC) Basketball Championship at Tamale Polytechnic Court.
The Upper-West based institution handed host institution Tamale a major shock by piping them to a high octane game which turned out to be closer than expected after taking a massive lead in the opening quarters.
The third edition of Ghana’s grandest tertiary basketball championship, headlined by Rexona has already had major upsets following Pentecost University College’s undefeated run in Zone A. Wa Polytechnic followed suit by commanding a massive nine point lead heading into the third quarter before a late Tamale rally made matters close.
In the final quarter, Wa Polytechnic held a solitary point lead (20-19) before a combination of missed free throws from Tamale and clutch shots ensured Wa take a win.
NJA College of Education’s late withdrawal due to internal challenges means University of Development Studies (Tamale) will play against winners Wa Polytechnic in the next game.
The UPAC Championship is supported by MTN, CAL Bank and Fanyogo in partnership with Basketballghana.com, TV3, Y FM and Ghana Sports Newspaper.
