Warm up games for the 2016 Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges (UPAC) Basketball Championship were completed over the weekend at the University of Ghana with Wisconsin and Central University Colleges winning their respective games.
In the last game of the day, Marshalls University College beat Zenith University College 25-20 and the team’s coach was impressed with not just the win but the scrimmage also.
Speaking to Basketballghana.com, James Okine described the two day event as a great opportunity to know the team’s weaknesses and things they have to work on to improve themselves for the Private Universities Students Association (PUSAG) Games and UPAC.
The 2016 UPAC Championship begins on March 5 at the University of Professional Studies and is headlined by best-selling deodorant brand, Rexona.
After the win he said ,”It was too easy,we started with our team B till the third quarter. We believe this is our year to win the championship because we started preparations way back from last year whilst other schools were relaxing.”
Marshalls University trailed Zenith-the reigning PUSAG basketball champions 4-17 entering the third quarter but was able to overturn the huge deficit thanks to dead eye shooting from Guard Daniel Okoe Laryea. Zenith had no answers to the barrage of three point shots from Marshalls who played without key players including Evans Anfom.
Last year’s fourth placed team, Marshalls, will play University of Ghana, Central University College and Wisconsin University College on April 8.
The 2016 UPAC Championship is supported by Fanyogo, MTN and CAL Bank in partnership with Basketballghana.com, Y FM, TV3 and Ghana Sports.
