Sunyani Polytechnic is synonymous with the Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges (UPAC) Basketball Championship after appearing in the maiden edition in 2011. The competition was created to address the need for a tournament which will feature all tertiary institutions.
The 2016 UPAC Championship is set to feature 28 institutions drawn from all of Ghana’s ten regions to compete for the biggest tertiary basketball championship in the country beginning March.
Series of warm up games will be played prior to the commencement of the main event. The 10 week-long programme will be headlined by world best-selling deodorant Rexona.
Sunyani Polytechnic will make a second appearance at the Championship with an aim to progress into the latter stages for the first time in the institution’s history. The magical run in 2011 had the Brong-Ahafo based institution scale through the zonal qualifiers despite suffering a 35-48 loss to champions Kumasi Polytechnic.
2011 Champions Accra Polytechnic knocked Sunyani out of the title race in the quarter finals as the 2010 Ghana Polytechnic Students Association (GHAPSA) Games winners added the UPAC Championship to its medal haul.
Sunyani Polytechnic will be hell bent on recapturing such feats and even fare better than those achievements in 2011.
The 2016 UPAC BAsketball Championship is sponsored by the world’s best selling deodorant brand Rexona and supported by CAL Bank and MTN in partnership with media outlets including TV3, Starr FM and Basketballghana.com and Graphic Sports.
