The 2016 Rexona Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges (UPAC) Basketball Championship is set to take place between March 5 and April 16. Conversely, a series of warm up games for participating schools to fine tune their skills will precede the much awaited tournament.
Counting down to tip off later this month, Basketballghana.com takes a look at University of Cape-Coast’s (UCC) chances heading into this year’s championship.
The tertiary institution has been a constant feature in the UPAC Championship from the very start in 2011 where the team managed to place fourth in the qualifiers in a zone containing the likes of Takoradi Polytechnic, Cape Coast Polytechnic and University of Education (Winneba).
Conversely, UCC improved its’ performance in last year’s edition by qualifying second in the zone despite suffering a narrow 22-24 defeat to champions Takoradi Polytechnic before an expectant home crowd in the final game.
UCC go into UPAC on the back of securing an impressive bronze medal at the Ghana University Sports Association (GUSA) Games earlier this year. The team defeated University of Development Studies to clinch third place.
Despite the impressive feat, the team was in no mood to celebrate as per the words of assistant coach Lawrence Ampiah, “There were so many problems within the team we decided to let it go because most of them (players) this is the first time playing under such pressure from outside so its rather unfortunate.”
Teams must be on the lookout as UCC continues its’ ascent to the top.
The 2016 UPAC BAsketball Championship is sponsored by the world’s best selling deodorant brand Rexona and supported by CAL Bank in partnership with media outlets including TV3, Starr FM and Basketballghana.com and Graphic Sports.
