Ghana Basketball Association (GBBA) Chairman David Addo Ashong has bemoaned the lack of resources as the main reason behind the nation’s failure to perform in global competitions.
The astute administrator made the call when he spoke to Basketballghana.com ahead of the 2016 Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges (UPAC) Basketball Championship set to take place from March 5 to April 16.
He said: “It comes back to the issue of resources. National teams are supported by the nation and so the lack of resources at that level affect directly things we can do at that level.”
If we want to develop capacity at the national level we have to do that as a nation. We have to get a proper venue to attract proper competition. We need a sustained effort and commitment.”
Despite the increasing level of competitions across the country including the Rush Community Basketball Tournament in Accra and the GSP Basketball League in Sunyani, the national teams are yet to hit such highs.
Ahead of UPAC, the GBBA Chairman expressed his delight with the progression of basketball in Ghana.
The 2016 UPAC Basketball Championship is sponsored by the world’s best selling deodorant brand Rexona and supported by CAL Bank in partnership with media outlets including TV3, Starr FM and Basketballghana.com and Graphic Sports.
