The 2016 Rexona Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges (UPAC) Basketball Championship is set to take place between March 5 and April 16. Conversely, a series of warm up games for participating schools to fine tune their skills will precede the much awaited tournament.
Counting down to tip off later this month, Basketballghana.com takes a look at University of Ghana’s chances at claiming the biggest and best tertiary competition in Ghana.
The tertiary institution has been through the wars lately having recorded mediocre results in the UPAC Championship and other tertiary basketball tournaments. UG famously failed to progress out of Zone 3 which included novices Marshalls University College, Wisconsin University College and little known basketball tavern, Central University College.
UG reached its’ lowest point after a 26-32 loss to Marshalls; Ghana’s premier University has since turned its’ fortunes around. The Legon based side went on an undefeated run en route to annexing the 24th Ghana University Sports Association (GUSA) Games earlier this year.
What marked UG out from the rest of the competition at the GUSA Games was the team first-oriented approach it adopted despite having stand out talents including Emmanuel Wolffe.
Coach Meme Falconer’s side also showcased enduring stamina and strength to pip University of Professional Studies (UPSA) to the title in Winneba. UG will hope to build on the momentum gained to ensure a better performance in this year’s edition.
The 2016 UPAC BAsketball Championship is sponsored by the world’s best selling deodorant brand Rexona and supported by CAL Bank in partnership with media outlets including TV3, Starr FM and Basketballghana.com and Graphic Sports.
