University of Ghana Director of Sports Dr. Bella Bello Bitugu has rebuffed statements that suggest his outfit deliberately cheated in the just ended Ghana University Sports Association (GUSA) Games.
The school’s female basketball team had points deducted from two games played in the competition and 20 points awarded to the opposing teams following Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology’s (KNUST) protest that the school fielded an unqualified player.
In an interview with Yaw Sakyi Afari host of TV3’s “Fastbreak”, Dr. Bello said:
“UG have the standard and reputation to defend that under no circumstance will we deliberately field an unqualified player.”
According to him, the lady was supposed to have completed her program last year (2015) unfortunately she didn’t either pass some subjects or she didn’t appear when she was supposed to write.
He stated there is a grace period up to two years to complete for her certificate and she writes semester exams and internal assessment exams and this qualify’s her as a student as such but GUSA says no.
He continued, ” She is a complete student of the UG but the complex technicalities disqualified her.”
UG’s wins in the tournament were overturned after GUSA ruled in KNUST’s favour. UG was fined 50 Ghana Cedis for losing the case and half of the protest fee KNUST paid will be refunded to them for winning the case.
However, the male basketball team of the institution made amends by wining gold ahead of University of Professional Studies (UPSA).
