University of Ghana (UG) head coach Meme Falconer has highlighted defense as the main factor in his side’s winning run to claim gold in the 24th Ghana University Sports Associations(GUSA) Games.
The Legon-based institution saw off a stern challenge from University of Professional Studies (UPSA) in the final to record a 65-49 win. UG’s victory was more impressive considering the team did not lose a single game in the tournament.
UG made consecutive fastbreak generated points to extend their lead to 13 as they kept a water tight check on UPSA’s guards to which coach Falconer rightly acknowledged saying,
“If your team is tired and are not gonna fall back in time, we are gonna take the fast break route”.
When asked about his team’s many converted fast break points as the reason for his team’s triumph in an interview with Basketballghana.com, the ebullient coach said:
“We don’t work on fastbreak we work on defense. When the defense stops the ball, then we are gonna run.”
UG’s win ensures Ghana’s premier University will represent Ghana at the West African University Games (WAUG).
