The draw for Ghana’s biggest basketball tournament, Sprite Ball produced scintillating pairings that will keep fans on the edge of their seats come January.
The 2016 Sprite Ball Championship match days will be held between January 5-7 at El-Wak Stadium in Accra. Ahead of the championship, the 26 qualified schools were drawn into groups on TV3’s ‘FastBreak’ with familiar matchups dominating the storylines.
In the boys division, Volta Region champions Mawuli Senior High School will square off against Koforidua Secondary Technical School in Group A.
Both schools were drawn in Group B for the 2014 edition of Sprite Ball which was ultimately won by Keta Senior High School. Curiously Keta failed to qualify for next year’s edition as they were usurped by Mawuli and Kadjebi Asato.
K.S.T.S.’s 2013 final clash with Mfantsipim School will be renewed in 2016. Defending champions Mfantsipim beat the Eastern Regional side 46-36 in that match and will look for another win as they prepare for a fifth national championship.
In Group B, Prempeh College and Adisadel College will cross swords once more at the preliminary stage. For 2015 Sprite Ball, both schools found themselves in Group A alongside Keta and Ghana Lebanon Islamic Senior High School.
The upcoming match between the two should be an interesting affair as both schools played second fiddle in respective regional championships.
In the girls’ division, Group A is rightly dubbed the group of death because it features two past winners of the championship.
Aggrey Memorial Mount Zion School and St. Mary’s Senior School won the 2013 and 2007 respective editions. Aggrey’s triumph came at the expense of St. Mary’s in the 2013 final as the Central Region-based school conjure up a 19-12 win.
Come January, the two teams will renew hostilities as they are set to face each other in Group A.
