The Osu Hawks ethched their name into the history books as they emerged victorious in the Rush Community Basketball Tournament final.
The Hawks beat the Ashaiman Tigers 80-74 deep into the Ghanaian night as Emmanuel Dickson of the Hawks was declared the overall Most Valuable Player of the tournament.
Guard Benjamin Debrah scored a game high 25 points and gathered 10 rebounds to secure the Hawks yet another win to make it an undefeated run to the title. Debrah’s efforts were complemented by Dickson’s 17 point game.
Osu’s win was more remarkable given the team had just an hour to recover from a gruelling semi final game with Tudu Warriors earlier in the day and justified Coach Sowah’s firm belief in his team’s overall depth.
‘I registered 20 players and every one of them is capable so I can play a totally new set” Coach Sowah said to Basketballghana.com during an exhibition game before the final.
Ashaiman Tigers quest for glory ended in defeat as they succumbed to the might of the tourney’s only unbeaten side. The Tigers dispatched community rivals Tema Sharks after overtime in the final day’s first game.
The day turned out to be a frustrating one for star man Elvis Pobi Siaw who had to sit out for extended minutes against Tema and ultimately fouled out of the game. He went on to convert just one of eight 3-point attempts against Osu Hawks.
The competition winners took home a cash prize worth $3000 dollars with the losing finalist earning $1500 dollars. The competition’s Most Valuable Player Emmanuel Dickson earned 1000 Ghana Cedis worth of shopping vouchers from sports apparel company, adidas
The Rush Community Basketball Tournament also had an all-female exhibition game which the Galaxy team lost 3-8 to the Magic team. High flyer Griffin emerged winner of the slam duk contest.
