Qualifiers for 2016 Sprite Ball Championship was completed over the weekend in Takoradi. Ghana Secondary Technical School, St. John’s Senior High and Shama Senior High School rounded up the list of qualified schools set to compete at the tournament as last year’s semifinalists Bompeh crushed out .
The Sprite Ball 2016 championship comes off at the El-Wak Stadium in Accra between January 3-7 next year and will feature 26 schools drafted from six regions in Ghana. The Rite Sports event which will celebrate its ninth edition come January, is considered one of the best and biggest organized basketball competitions in the West African sub-region.
Throughout the qualifiers, schools like St. Augustine’s College, defending female champions T.I.Ahmadiyya and Koforidua Secondary Technical School (K.S.T.S.) maintained the status quo as they easily qualified for the championship.
On the other hand, the male team of Kadjebi Asato continued the streak of annual surprise appearances at the championship by placing second in the regional tourney to qualify behind Mawuli Senior High School as Volta Region representatives.
In the Central Region, Aggrey Memorial’s male team exceeded expectations to place second behind Augustine’s. Unlike their female colleagues, this is the first time the school’s male team will represent the region at the finals.
However, January’s tournament will be without some familiar faces. In the Volta Region, 2014 champions Keta Senior High School failed to advance past the regional tournament. Adisadel College also missed out on the championship by failing to qualify out of the Central Region.
