The Western regional qualifiers for Sprite Ball 2016 will get underway tommorow at Ghana Secondary Technical School’s (G.S.T.S.) basketball court in Takoradi.
The region’s schools will go against each other in a battle for two available slots in the boys’ division and a sole slot in the girls’ division.
The 2016 Sprite Ball competition-which will be in its’ ninth year- takes place at El-Wak Stadium in Accra between January 3-7, 2016.
Sprite Ball 2016 will have 16 and 10 schools compete in the boys’ and girls’ divisions respectively. The qualified schools have been drafted from six other regions in Ghana.
On the eve of the qualifiers, Bompeh seem primed to repeat the heroics from last year’s competition as they waltzed their way through the qualifiers and book ended the surprise run of form by earning a third place finish in the main tournament.
Bompeh will be counting on star man Christopher Appiah to once again deliver the goods when the school comes up against old foes in G.S.T.S., St.John’s School, Asankragua Senior High School and Takoradi Senior High School.
Appiah’s inspired play in last year’s competition earned him a nomination in the Male High School Player of the Year Award category at the 2015 Ghana Basketball Awards.
In the girls’ division, 2009 champions Fijai Senior High School will do battle against the likes of Arch-Bishop Porter Girls’ and Ahantaman Girls’ in their quest for another appearance at the tournament. The school has a long affinity with the tournament having been the first school in the female category to represent the region in the tournament.
The confirmed list of qualified schools include St. Augustine’s College, defending champions Mfantsipim, Opoku Ware, Pope John Senior High and Accra Academy for the boys’ division. The girls’ division will feature defending champions T.I.Ahmadiyya from the Ashanti Region, St. Mary’s Senior High and Aggrey Memorial.
