The list of novices for Sprite Ball Championship’s ninth edition grew with Aggrey Memorial’s boys’ basketball team becoming the latest school set to make a debut appearance at the basketball tournament.
Aggrey Memorial along with St. Augustine’s College and national champions Mfantsipim School will represent the Central Region in the boys’ division. Aggrey Memorial Mount Zion Senior High School girls’ basketball team and Mfantsiman Girls Senior High School are the region’s duo representatives in the upcoming tournament.
The 2016 Sprite Ball is set to feature 16 schools in the boys’ division and 10 schools in the girls’ division between January 3-7 at El-Wak Stadium in Accra. The Rite Sports sponsored event is considered the biggest and best organized basketball competition in the West African sub region.
Unlike their female counter parts, Aggrey’s male basketball team has lagged well behind after failing to make in roads at regional and national levels respectively. A former Sprite Ball champion, Aggrey’s female team is a basketball powerhouse that has completely dominated the Central Region for years.
The male team looked primed to emulate the great feats of their female counterparts as they dispatched championship regulars Adisadel College, Asuansi Secondary Technical School (ASUTECH) and Winneba Senior High School en route to capturing a historic second place finish.
In the Volta Region, Kadjebi Asafo’s Senior High School’s male team also qualified to Sprite Ball for the first time.
The Sprite Ball Championship is an inter-High Schools basketball tournament in Ghana that seeks to unearth talents and develop existing ones amongst High Schools in Ghana. The tournament has grown in leaps and bounds since its inception in 2007.
