The latest round of regional qualifiers for next year’s Sprite Ball Championship had another victim to a list of shock exits from the competition.
Wesley Girls’ Senior high School failed to qualify after placing third at the Central regional qualifiers behind perennial regional winners Aggrey Memorial Mount Zion Senior High School and Mfantsiman Girls Senior High School.
In the Volta Region, 2014 national champions KETASCO could not beat out the likes of Kadjebi Asafo and Mawuli Senior High Schools to be dumped out of the competition in the preliminary stages.
The third place finish means “Wey Gey Hey” missed out on securing one of two tickets in the girls’ divison for next year’s competition which is set to take place between January 3-7, 2016 at El-Wak Stadium in Accra.
The Sprite Ball Championship is an inter-High Schools basketball tournament that seeks to unearth talents and develop existing ones and is considered the best and biggest basketball tournament in Ghana.
2016 Sprite Ball will feature 16 schools compete in the boys’ division and 10 schools compete in the girls’ division. The qualified schools have been drawn from seven regions in Ghana.
Once regarded the”Queens” of the coast, it is shocking how far the school has fallen from the summit of success in the best and biggest basketball competition in Ghana. The 2008 and 2009 Central regional champions could not replicate the title-winning dose of old in their latest quest to rule women basketball.
On the other hand, regular names St. Augustine’s College, Aggrey Memorial Boys team and defending champions Mfantsipim School will represent Central Region in the boys’ division.
Aggrey Memorial Mount Zion Senior High School and Mfantsiman Girls Senior High School will represent Central Region in the girls’ division where they will come up against T.I. AMASS, Nkawkaw Girls and Awudome Girls’ Senior High School.
