Champions die hard and that seems to be the mantra of four time national winners Mfantsipim School after securing a spot at next year’s Sprite Ball championship which is set to take place between January 3-7 at El-Wak Stadium in Accra.
The Sprite Ball Championship is an inter-High Schools basketball tournament that seeks to unearth talents and develop existing ones and is considered the best and biggest basketball tournament in Ghana.
Mfantsipim or “The School” have been a sustained force of utter dominance in the tournament as the multiple champions have already been awarded a national title for keeps following its third national title in 2013.
They will join forces with St.Augustine’s College and Aggrey Memorial boys team to represent the Central Region in the boys’ division.
The 2016 Sprite Ball Championship will have 16 and 10 schools compete in the boys’ and girls’ divisions respectively. The qualified schools have been drafted from seven regions in Ghana.
Long considered a first class education destination in the West African sub-region, Mfantsipim have broadened their sphere of influence to the core of arguably Ghana’s second most popular sport.
The oldest high school in Ghana head to the tournament in high hopes of adding a fifth title to their bulging trophy cabinet come January. Indeed, the current crop of players have a daunting mission to accomplish as they set out on another trophy quest.
The backbone of Mfantsipim’s success has come courtesy a great recruiting system where players are tapped right from a young age. The title-winning 2013 group were led by Husain Mohammed Abubakar who was the best player at the Milo Junior Ball in 2011.
The current roster will look to follow the footsteps of renowned names like Edem Dumenu, Paul Adomako, Daniel Owusu and Srigbor Setor who led their respective teams to titles in previous years.
In January, “Kwabotwe” will face stiff competition from regional rivals St. Augustine’s College, two time semi finalists Opoku Ware and PRESEC (Legon).
Pls the first team that won was lead by team captain RICHARD SENCHERAY…let’s honour the right people pls.
