Owass-Prempeh nwGiants Opoku Ware and Prempeh College have booked their place in the 2015/16 Sprite Ball finals.

As expected, the two giants have qualified from the Ashanti region and will take a dig at the title shot this season.
Opoku Ware Schooland Prempeh College, two of the finest schools in Ghana’s second largest city, Kumasi will represent the boys division in the national final in Accra in January.

Reigning national champions TI Amass also booked their ticket in the girls division after dispatching Kumasi High in an enthralling final.

The two teams get the nod to represent the same region in the girls category ahead of the hugely anticipated finals in the capital.
Since making their debut appearance in the championship, Prempeh and Opoku Ware have dominated the Ashanti Regional qualifiers and they extended their dominance by trouncing their respective opponents with ease.

Considered the biggest schools in the region, Opoku Ware and Prempeh are locked in a constant struggle to gain supremacy over the other. The supremacy strife has extended to the most popular sport in senior high schools all over Ghana.

The basketball old guards in Ashanti have a long standing rivalry that stems from Opoku Ware’s impressive performances in the major championship where the “okatayie” boys have managed consecutive third place finishes.

The guys from the land of “Amanfo)” secured passage to the main championship despite being beaten to the regional title by Opoku Ware.

However, the rival tandem survived the challenge from the likes of KASS (Kumasi Anglican Secondary School), KUMACA (Kumai Academy), Kumasi High School, Kumasi Technical Institute and T.I. AMASS.
Whereas the boys basketball teams from T.I. AMASS and Kumasi High School couldn’t qualify, the girls teams did their schools proud by qualifying ahead of Toase Senior High School, Yaa Asantewaa Senior High School, St. Louis Senior High School, Kumasi Wesley Girls High School and St.Monica’s Senior High School.

Reigning two-time Sprite Ball Championship winners T.I. AMASS, remain peerless as they steamrolled their way to yet victory over the girls basketball team of Kumasi High School.

The landslide victory ensured T.I. AMASS will be in the main championship games in Accra from January 5-9 next year. Kumasi High School exceeded expectations by meandering their way past a strong field that included former champions Yaa Asantewaa.

The Sprite Ball Championship is an inter-High Schools basketball tournament in Ghana that seeks to unearth talents and develop existing ones amongst High Schools in Ghana. Since its inception in January, 2007, the competition has grown to become the biggest and prestigious basketball competition in Ghana and West Africa.
