Power Forward Kwame Boamah Djan scored 14 points and grabbed a team high 19 rebounds to lead the Sakumono Chargers to a 70-67 win over the Teshie Lions recording their first win in the Rush Community Basketball Tournament
Boamah had his best game of the tournament as his impressive displays at the defensive end made for fast break opportunities for his teammates.
Replacing regular Point Guard Nana Agyei Afriyie who was out injured, Emmanuel Sarkodie Appiah scored a team high 17 points in just 20 minutes for the Chargers.
Despite having two losses, Sakumono still had a chance of getting back into contention for the title heading into their matchup against the Teshie Lions.
The lions who impressed in their tournament debut win over the Cape Coast Bears were competitive throughout the entire game and kept the game’s outcome in flux.
Star Center James Boye could only muster 11 points as both teams dabbled with foul trouble in the game.
The Lions went on an 8 point run but cooled off in the latter stages of the first quarter ad allowed Sakumono back into the game on the back of inspired plays for Small Forward John Karikari and Guard Appiah who nailed a crucial three point shot to tie the game at 12.
The engaging nature of the previous quarter did not waver in the second quarter as both teams contested multiple loose balls and rebounds. However the scores, which stood at 36-35 in favor of Teshie, could have been more but for the multiple air balled shots from 3 point range.
Emmanuel Appiah made a big statement in the third stanza by driving hard to the basket on many occasions. The Chargers finally managed to take control of the lead for the first time in the game with four minutes to play.
Starting Center Selasi Gamadeku extended Charger lead to 10 with a jumper right on the free throw line. Conversely, Teshie kept things interesting through George Numarworse who nailed consecutive three-point shots to tie the game at 63 with less than four minutes left to play.
After timeout, Kwame Boamah and Karikari nailed crucial free throws to seal the victory.
