Founder of Giants of Africa, an initiative to unearth and nurture basketball talents, Masai Ujiri, has lauded Ghana for its great basketball potential after a two-day clinic at the University of Ghana, Legon, in Accra.
The clinic, coming on the heels of a successful session in Nigeria last week, drew 50 young Ghanaian basketball players who received tutorials from high level coaches in the persons of Patrick Mutombo (Assistant Coach of Denver Nuggets), Jama Mahlalela (Assistant Coach of Toronto Raptors), and Patrick Englebrecht (Toronto Raptors International Scouting Director).
“We are a foundation that wants to teach kids the basic fundamentals of basketball and life skills. Indeed, we are thrilled and encouraged by the great talent displayed today, Ghana is blessed with great talent in the sport,” Ujiri told TV3’s Fast Break on Sunday.
“Ghana is a place we have had an interest in. After our successful programme in Nigeria we decided to come here to do same with kids from all over Ghana who were selected by local coaches, and I must say we never regretted we did.”
He revealed that his foundation will engage in several community programmes with the SOS Village while in the country.
Urjiri also commended Ecobank, NBA, Nike, Nestlé Milo, MLSE Foundation and Sportscorp Travel for their immense contribution in making the training camp possible.
