The 2015 UPAC Basketball Championship rolls out this weekend without the University of Ghana.
The country’s premier University crushed out of the competition in the knockout phase under painful circumstances.
What even makes it worse is the inability of the team to progress despite being handed a lifeline in the qualification process.
Coach Yusif Tahiru’s men failed to come to the party, losing first the Greater Accra zone three slot to Marshalls University College, then Zenith University College in the playoffs.
Sadly the University of Ghana basketball team seems to be on the decline in the post era of some of the finest talents who have graced the court.
Former player Nana Osei, Jake Morrison and McMartey Lawer amongst others watched on in agony as their former team bundled out of the elite competition in front of their home fans.
Disciplinary and tactical issues have been cited as the chief reasons for their sorry state and must quickly put their house in order to curtail further embarrassment.
Eight top tertiary institutions will line up on their own court between April 24-25 to battle out for the crown.
The two-day event will see defending champions clashing with heavyweights Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Takoradi Polytechnic and Zenith University College in the proverbial ‘group of death’ in pool B.
Current GUSA Champions University of Cape Coast comes up against giant-killers Marshalls University College, Kumasi Polytechnic and University of Professional Studies (UPSA).
