Bompeh

In the long run, unbroken quiet of the Sprite Ball Championship, a man can get to thinking strange thoughts- thoughts that, if examined at another time of year, might seem a little crazy.

Thoughts like this: Bompeh Senior High will beat Presbyterian Boys Senior High.

It will sound weird and unbelievable from the start but that’s what the debutant managed to achieve during the 2015 Sprite Ball finals in Accra.

The Takoradi-based side school became the toast of many fans at the El-Wak stadium with a shocking fine display that has left tongues wagging.

As the memory of the season fades and attention turn to the UPAC Championship, the story of Bompeh Senior High will not go unnoticed.

The provided many with exciting moments and disappointed when their fan base had skyrocketed. But the story of Bompeh basketball team is one which will continue to gain massive inches in the Ghanaian media.

Not many people knew about their quality with pundits writing them off easily, minutes after the draw took place.

But sometimes you need those underdog tag against the resurgent teams to really explode and play your normal game without any expectations on your shoulders.

Having been paired in the same group with champions Ketasco and regulars Accra High and Akosombo International, one never would have thought they will turn out to be the shinning and enviable team in the championship.

They started on a blistering note, beating the defending champions by half a basketball before accounting for Akosombo International and Accra High to amass maximum points.

Bompeh came into the picture without any record or big game changers but their team work paid off by all standards as they made pundits to rewrite their notes.

This is a team which made an improbable leap from the lottery to the last four with a built-in-buzz at the El-Wak stadium.

They proved themselves to be far ahead of the pack and despite their inability to win the title, they left the venue with their pride and heads high.

Bompeh lost the plot against eventual winners Mfantsipim but produced one of the best performances during the two-day competition to reach a high ceiling in their debut performance.

These aren’t aberrations, mind you. In the Sprite Ball Championship and all professional sports, teams and individuals experience swings in motivation and, for the lack of a better word, spiritedness, even on the biggest stages. Historically, there have been very few squads which consistently put opponents away in four or five games. Ketasco did it in 2014, likewise TI Amass.

It therefore stands to reason that Bompeh have chalked their name in the history books, leaving giants of the West, Ghana Secondary Technical School to play catch-ups, at least this year.
