For the hundreds of fans who gathered at the main basketball court of the Koforidua Secondary Technical Institute (KSTS) on Saturday, the exploits of power forward Prince Charles of Abuakwa State College can never go unnoticed.

The underachieving school finally turned on the heat in style to lift the 2010 Eastern Regional Championship thanks at the expense of home side KSTS who were shell-shocked. The home side had just found their voices after been quiescent during previous meetings.

Captain of KSTS Ekow was phenomenal on the day displaying great qualities on the court, but the young man who stole the show was Charles. The young chap who played for Legon during an U-18 basketball championship for communities in the Greater Accra region dubbed ‘2010 Community Dunks’ was simply out of this world. He showed so much tenacity and his moves were a delight to watch as virtually tore opposing teams apart with some daring runs and sublime piece of skills on the court.

This was the third time that Abusco has participated in the championship and it had to take the individual brilliance of Charles to land them the trophy.

The fighting spirit of the young talent caught the attention of the many crazy basketball fans that throng the venue over the weekend to be part of the most prestigious championship among the youth in the West African country.

He will be the key man for his school when they represent the region in the grand finale in Accra next month.

The players from the Kyebi-based school have become instant heroes in the school and the community after encrypting their name in gold plate.

He told basketballghana.com: I’m thrilled to be part of this great history and all I can say is hardwork pays and we’re very happy with our achievement’.

‘We knew there were equally great teams but we were very determined this year and that’s how come you saw that kind of a performance. We also knew KSTS were going to be tough and the fans were going to be behind them understandably so because they’re the host side and so we had to prepare mentally and that what we did’.

He added: We’re happy as a team but particular happy for myself because I think I’m improving match by match and hopefully it will continue like that at the grand-finale in Accra. Abusco simply can’t wait.
