Kaneshie staged one of the biggest comebacks in the game on Saturday night to clinch the title in season-2 of Community Dunks at the expense of host Legon in a highly charged and nerve racking encounter.
Sam Tagoe’s men who ended the competition staged a massive response to triumph 48-47 to send their fans into spontaneous celebration that is expected to go deep into the night.
In a game that was characterized by end to end action from both teams, it was the determination and the never say die attitude of Kaneshie that saw them through.
The host seems to be cruising to their first major silverware of the season at the closing stages of the final quarter until a Francis Nii Lamptey’s free throw caused the damage for Emmanuel Wobil’s enterprising youngsters.
Legon will leave to rue the lost opportunity and may probably attribute their defeat to ill-luck which eluded them.
They had taking a narrow 47-46 in the final quarter with eleven minutes remaining and they looked poised to lift the trophy. But an ignominious foul on power forward Francis Lamptey heightened the enthusiasm of the sizeable crowd who kept chanting.
Lamptey took his spot and delivered the two field goals which killed off the challenge of their opponent.
The newly –installed champions remained the only side that never dropped a point in the one-month long tournament.
The game which was attended by the Deputy Minister of Youth & Sports, Hon. Nii Nortey Duah, Chief Executive Officer of National Sports Council, Mr Worlanyo Agrah, Chairman of the Ghana Basketball Association, Mr. David Addo-Ashong, Director of the University of Ghana Sports Directorate, Dr. Emmanuel Owusu-Ansah and host of other dignitaries saw some superb display of basketball artistry by all four (4) finalists: KANESHIE, NIMA-MAAMOBI, TESHIE-NUNGUA and LEGON.
The exhibition game between University of Ghana and Accra All-Stars lived up to its billing as we saw more three-pointers, serious drives, blocks and steals. In the end, the All-Stars made minced-meat of the UG team.
