Organisers of the impending U-18 basketball championship dubbed Community Dunks are grappling with the number of communities that have expressed interest to participate in the second edition of the tournament; just a day after the date for the 2010 edition was announced.

Over fifteen communities have announced their intention to participate in the competition which is expected to unearth mushrooming talents as the dream to promote and develop the second most preferred sports in the country continues unabated.

Rite Multimedia who are the brainchild behind the novelty league confirmed on Tuesday only eight communities will take part in the one-month long competition, prompting the various communities to confirm their participation in droves.

‘Barely a day after we informed the communities of the second edition of the community dunks the number of teams that have expressed in the tournament is beyond imagination’. Head of production at Rite Multimedia, Lawrence Nartey Kornor told basketballghana.com

‘It bears ample testimony of how exciting these teams are to play in the most celebrated basketball tournament amongst communities in Ghana. Our major challenge now is which community would be sacrificed because we’re working with budget and time.’

‘It’s a shame but we can’t allow more than the projected number take part in the championship. We’re still sticking with the eight communities which means the various teams would have to fight for a place in the final spot’.

He added: There is a criterion and they’ve all been informed of what it will require to be part of it and be part of history. Cantonment is the only side guaranteed a place in the final eight places because they’re the defending champions. Apart from that the rest must meet the requirement before being admitted into the championship’. he concluded.

The 2010 Community Dunks takes place at the El-Wak stadium from September 12-3 October every Sunday from 1- 6pm.

Community Dunks is an initiative of Rite Multimedia and sponsored by Indomie with support from Metro TV.
