Police clinched bronze in the Thome Cabalan Memorial Championship after a nerve-racking 81–79 victory over Hoops on Thursday.
It was a head on clash between two of the finest teams in Ghana as Police avenged their defeat to the Cape Coast based side in the Greater Accra series.
Fans were held spell bound throughout the 4 quarters as the action swung from one end to the other. An even contest was capped with some incredible fast breaks, quick rebounds and solid defensive work from both sides. With less than 10 seconds left for the buzzer to go, Ablor was left unmarked as he got that decisive field goal that sent the fans and players agog.
Young and enterprising manager Claudius Thompson and his men left the venue with nothing despite their impressive run in the 10-day championship. Despite their array of stars like sniper Meme Falconer and Debrah in their fold, they couldn’t stop the character and determination of Police who came into the game with revenge on their minds.
In a campaign that saw them lose the plots against impregnable CEPS and Magic in the group stages and a nail biting defeat to Tema Youth at the semi-final spot, Police had enough reason to be motivated to clinch the third place to placate their suffering fans. They lived up to that billing and they end the competition as the second runner up. Quite clearly by no means achievement.
They are now recognized as one of the powerhouses of the game in the West African region.
We say kudos to Police for their feat.
