Ghana Secondary Technical School and Fijai Senior High became the first schools from the Western Region to be crowned champions of the prestigious Sprite Ball Championship held on the campus of Ghana Secondary Technical School (G.S.T.S) on Friday.
G.S.T.S underlined their status as the ‘powerhouse’ of basketball in the Wesetrn Region with a spendid team work coupled with some individual brilliance to clinch the title at the expense of perrenial rivals Ahantaman Senior high.
G.S.T.S began their quest to win the title with a resounding 13-5 victory over Takoradi Senior High – a repeat of their national championship semi-final clash last two months at Cape Coast before victory over arch-rivals St Johns, Bompeh Senior High and Adiembra Senior High Ahantaman handed them the title for the first time.
In the third place match, Takoradi Technical Institute made amends for the semi-final defeat to G.S.T.S to beat rivals Takoradi Senior High to clinch the final qualification spot for the grand finale in Accra next month.
Star point guard for Ghana Secondary Technical School, Sidney Larbi, will be dotingly remembered for his great passing and dribbling skills which inspired the team to success.
He virtually took the team on his shoulders and tore all teams apart on the court with some amazing basketball drills that caught the attention of hundreds of people who thronged the venue to catch a glimpse of an electrifying game.
Meanwhile Fijai Senior High also dangled their way through to beat Arch Bishop Porter Girls Senior High in the final of the female division amidst pump and pageantry. The Sekondi Essikado based team was inspired by the pressence of their male counterpart who cheered them on to beat their opponent 5-1 while Shama Senior High also placed third to book their ticket for the national event at the El-Wak Stadium on December 19th and 20th.
More than fifteen (15) schools participated in the one-day basketball fiesta which attracted a charged atmosphere that has left a deep-seated mark in the regional championship.
Many people basketballghana spoke to described the games as the best thing to happen to schools in the region in many years and called on governent and other stakeholders to augment the effort of Rite Multimedia in the development and promotion of the sport in country.
