Akosombo International School returned to their base at Akosombo to a heroes welcome after they became the second side from the region to clinch the prestigious Sprite Ball Championship.
The school was turned into one big party arena as hundreds of fans stepped out to welcome the victorious boys and girls.
The players, decked in their school attire stepped off the bus to a mix of thunderous applause, drumming and dancing before they were ushered in to meet the school authorities. The headmaster promised the players they will be rewarded handsomely for their efforts and paid tribute to their immense fighting spirit which saw them annex the giant trophy and earned a qualification ticket to play in the grand finale in December.
AIS lost one match against Koforidua Secondary Technical School (KSTS) enroute to the final where they beat Pope John’s Senior High (Pojoss) to lift the trophy in the male division. But their female counterpart were not second time lucky as they lost the trophy they won last year to highly unfancied Nkawkaw Senior High (Kawsec).
The Sports Master of the school Francis Asare Korang told basketballghana: ‘Our team played well and we deserve the title and hopefully we will win the ultimate in Accra.’
‘Our boys were unlucky to have lost the final group game against KSTS but we made amends to prove critics wrong in the semi-final and the final game.’
‘We are excited with the performance of our two teams and I promise you will be coming for the national title because we will be zooming into serious training and with determination, we will clinch the double.’
