JULY 17, 2009
Last Friday at the El-Wak sports stadium Tema led by their head Coach Emmanuel Quaye a.k.a Rubberman put up a splendid performance of good basketball and authoritatively beat the Cantonment team in Accra to jump to the top position in Group B in the U-18 basketball tournament christened “Community Dunks”.
Cheered on by their vociferous fans, the harbour boys mounted pressure on their opponents until their effort paid off in the dying minutes when series of their artistic runs mesmerized the Cantonment boys to end the game 70-54.
In another closely fought battle, Ashaiman showed little of their famed prodigious shots and this gave Dansoman some level of confidence as they took advantage of the loose defence of Ashaiman to record a 41-33 win.
Meanwhile Legon made history by becoming the first team to shake up the defence structure of the unbeaten Ridge team. Given technical guidance of Coach David Bamfo Agyeman, Legon lit up the final game when they took the game to their opponent and pinned them with some amazing skills, precise rebounds and excellent three pointers amidst cheers from the crowd to win the game 61-43.
Fans who thronged the El-Wak Stadium last weekend were overwhelmed and expressed the hope that the 13-week high-profile tournament will spearhead the revival of Basketball in Ghana.
This Friday 24th July 2009 will determine which of the teams qualifies for the second round of the competition as JAMES TOWN engages KANASHIE and CANTONMENT plays LEGON.
Community Dunks is an initiative of Rite Multimedia and sponsored by Sprite, and Indomie Noodles with support from TV Africa, Y-FM, DDP Outdoor Ltd, Silicon Productions, Ghana’s World news paper, Western Publications and 90 minutes News paper.
