Pentecost University College head coach Nii Kwei Kotey has lashed out at officials for bad calls during his side’s 27-37 loss to Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) in an outstanding Zone A game in the 2016 Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges (UPAC) Basketball Championship.
The game was played during Zone G qualifiers where University of Ghana (UG) beat Marshalls University College 31-29 to top the zone and secure a place in the quarter finals. Marshalls, despite losing to UG, Marshalls made it into the last eight by virtue of having a superior goal difference than fellow contenders Ho Polytechnic in Zone A and
Valley View University in Zone F.
However, a series of turnovers, bad shots and a spirited comeback from GIMPA saw Pentecost’s lead wiped out.
Kotey, vexed with what he deemed as bad refereeing, ushered his players off the court but returned and vented his anger on the officials in a post game interview with Basketballghana.com. He said:
“I don’t know what is wrong with the referees. I don’t know if they have something against us. All depends on the referees. Officiating was very bad”.
Pentecost went into the game having won two games in the opening rounds and needing to avoid a six point deficit loss. The team started the game strongly on their way to claiming a 10 point lead in the early quarters of the game.
GIMPA’s win secured the team’s participation in the quarter finals of the Championship and has since been drawn in Group A alongside University of Ghana, Accra Polytechnic and debutants University of Development Studies-Tamale.
