Galaxy Ladies unbeaten run in the Accra Basketball League (ABL) Women’s Division came to an end courtesy a 24-37 loss to Braves of CEPS in a Week Three game played at the Lebanon House in Tudu, Accra.
The team went into the game on the back of an impressive 28-22 win over Reformers in last weekend’s encounter. The opening round win was much easier as Galaxy earned a win and maximum points following Police Ladies’ failure to honor the game.
Having played less than their opponents, Braves jitters showed in the first quarter as Galaxy’s Naa Shika Moffat feasted on easy rebounds against the much smaller Braves side. The team deployed great movement on and off the ball to create spaces which culminated in Barbara Asante and Selinatu Quaye’s back to back three pointers.
Things changed in the second quarter with introduction of Matilda Gordon whose partnership with Gloria Gyampoh in Braves frontcourt added much needed size to the lineup.
Gordon’s presence created problems for Galaxy who struggled to match her intensity and strength. In an instance during the second quarter, Gordon posted up Galaxy’s Nancy’s Otibo, spun and scored beautifully in the paint.
With the score tied at 18 and Galaxy visibly tired, Braves took over the game to register a 10 point lead in the third quarter. Guards Grace Doe and Afia Agyeman facilitated Braves offense with crisp passes which freed the team’s bigs for easy baskets.
Magdalene Fiamekor sealed the win with two straight made three point shots.
Speaking in a post game interview, Galaxy coach Hashim Brimah pointed to his side’s drop in stamina as the reason behind the loss.
