It wasn’t really a vintage performance but host Ghana Secondary Technical School (GSTS) and Fijai Girls managed to retain the 2010 Sprite Ball Championship in the both the boys and girls division respectively in the Western region on Friday.
The atmosphere was electrifying as sixteen teams jostled for the right to play qualify and take part in the grand finale slated for the El-Wak Stadium next month.
Once again power forward for GSTS, Sydney Larbie was the chief tormentor for the side displaying sheer brilliance and bravado to help his school ink the title for the second time in arrow. It wasn’t really quite a spectacular display from the host as compared to how they played last year at the same venue, but some amount of resilience, and the huge sound of the home fans helped them to up the antics ad they scaled the hurdle 9-8.
The score line bears ample testimony of how close the contest was and how St John’s nearly grabbed victory from the jaws of their rivals on their own backyard. But lack of concentration in the dying embers of the game allowed arguably the championship best player Sydney Larbie power a powerful two-pointer on the stroke of the buzzer to send the home team into spontaneous celebration which is expected to go down the night.
Elsewhere, Fijai Girls made their presence count and defended the trophy they won last year with some amount of ‘easiness’ It was a roller coaster display from the Sekondi -based school who showcased tenacity and team chemistry to beat Takoradi Senior High (Tadisco) 12-8 in another explosive final.
Despite the defeat, Tadisco should be proud of their achievement. They at least dumped one of the powerful horses in the region, Archbishop Porter Girls out at the semi-final stage and that should be enough motivation going into the grand finale in Accra.
The four schools have hence booked their ticket for the national final slated for the El-Wak stadium from December 22nd and 23rd, 2010.

I agree with u on the fact that GSTS did not play as good as they did last year but the truth is that games between GSTS and St. Johns’ most often tend to lack flair and is more technical. These 2 teams have great respect for each other and that was why each side was more cautious than before. You saw how GSTS demolished Bompeh in the semis- that was a five star performance because they went all out considering the fact that Bompeh is not really a “basketball school”.
