Point guard for Ghana Secondary Technical School, Sydney Larbie, earned rave reviews following his first-rate performance at the Western Regional Sprite Ball Championship in their debut season last year.
The 15-year-od who is now a second year student showcased startling qualities that won the hearts and admirations of most fans at the venue.
He exhibited great stamina, amazing dribbling skills, speed, agility and his exceptional ball handling skills and control aided his school’s triumph at the highly competitive game.
Over 20 schools made their debut appearance in the prestigious Sprite Ball Championship and it was evident that the best indeed come from the West.
Schools like Arch Bishop Porter Girls, Takoradi, Shama, St John Senior High and host G.S.T.S amongst others entertained the hundreds of fans who thronged the venue to witness the one-day competition. The school etched its name and wrote it on gold plate as the first male school from the twin-city to be crowned champions of the celebrated competition.
Larbie was extremely instrumental in achieving that well-deserved feat over Ahantaman Senior High in the boy’s finals and he will come under the spotlight again in 2010.
He told basketballghana: ‘We know when you’re the defending champion, a lot rest on your shoulders and therefore we’re not going to be complacent at all and hopefully we can make our colleagues happy again’.
‘It’s always special to play in the Sprite Ball Championship and I must say that last year was first for us but we’ve improved over the past one year and I’m sure we’ll give off our best this year. We respect all teams but we’ll definitely count on home support and with the sort of team spirit and chemistry at our disposal, we’ll try and win for the second time’. Larbi added
